Our Table

Finally I got our table.  When we moved into this wreck of a house 8 years ago we opted for a sleek glass, wood and chrome affair.  Always, always in the back of my mind was the thought that it wasn't us, or the family we would become.  I dressed it up with oilcloth for the wee ones but they banged their heads on glass corners that were invisible to toddlers, they bashed toys and forks into its unforgiving glossiness- meanwhile I coveted big, bashed up farmhouse tables.

11 for Christmas made us act and now in all its trashed glory, which we love, our wooden dining table is here.  It has already seen a family grow up around it and here it is in our home to observe another.

  1. Lovely ... I love wooden tables ... seem so much softer and more child friendly than glass :) ... wishing you many happy years sitting at your new table ... chatting, eating, crafting and putting the world to rights ... Bee xx

    1. Thanks Bee, it's already seen serious play dough activity from the kiddos, and a few lovely meals. Many to come I hope too. Thanks for commenting and visiting I really appreciate it, enjoy the rest of the weekend, Jo xc

  2. Oh what a gorgeous post Jo! It's so nice to have a piece of furniture with a bit of history that makes you love it even more. How's life in Glasgow these days? x

    1. Thanks Jen- Its funny how you evolve slowly sometimes but we seem to be getting there with the house and how we use it. All is well if a tad wet and dreich here in Glasgow. I still love this city though- I was thinking the other day stepping out the side of central station on the way to work how the centre still excites me! When I was wee visiting my Nana shopping in the city was the most exciting thing ever! Hope your summer slightly less wet, thanks for commenting the postive feedback on posts is very much appreciated, Jo xx

  3. Such a lovely post! I am desperate for a big old bashed up kitchen table, except our kitchen is too small for a table of any kind, so it would be a dining room table...but hey.

I hope you enjoy many happy mealtimes around your new (old) table and make lots of memories. xx

    1. Thanks Gillian, From my looking around old wooden tables are cheap to pick up now. The pine ones look really great sanded down and waxed. You will find your way to one I am sure. We have an open plan space here and used to eat at the breakfast bar. It was becoming a bit cramped for us now and we just needed room to sit more people. Thanks for visiting as ever, hope your weekend has been good, Jo xx

  5. I have a very similar table by the looks of things. I love the rustic look too and so much easier to turn a blind eye to a bit of kid-bashing! x

    1. Hi Anna, thanks for commenting and good to hear we have the same taste in rustic tables! I am looking forward to have friends round for some nice meals with a wee bit of wine over the coming autumn. Lots of candles and we will be set. Hope your weekend was great, Jo xx

  6. I love the homeliness of a rustic wooden table and with dinks and scratches, it's all the better. A space for all sorts of family life to take place, from homework to mealtimes to cooking and gatherings. Lovely! x
